This is a newspaper article from the late 1800's that is advertising a new lacrosse club, which happened to be a popular sport during this time period. It is significant because it shows the a sign of Americans picking up the sport and we still play it today so this could have a big part as to why we play lacrosse today. This source shows me how advertisements were put out to get people playing organized sports. This shows how the sport could potentially grow back then, by the newspapers. I learned that America adopted a lot of its sports from other places. For example it was canada's national sport so we got it from them. Also I learned how people would come to play these sports, they would read advertisements about the sport and that would attract people to play them.
This is a document from the era of 1865-1898. This document is an ad from a newspaper. It is advertising different types of races that will be held. It is significant because it shows a sign of competition of athletics early on. It is also driven by money and that's what this document teaches you. Athletics used money to get athletes to compete. I learned that money was a big driving factor for athletes just like it is today. Athletes today also are big into money, without money we wouldn't have a lot of the sports we have today.

This picture shows two men fishing for pickerel at a tournament. Two men are standing on a frozen over lake and they are fishing for pickerel. This picture was drawn in 1872 based on the winners of the fishing tournament and it was in a lake in Michigan. This teaches me that people took things that used to be used for only survival like fishing into a sport. Also it shows me sports took over all aspects of life from athletic ability to even how much fish you could catch. We still do fishing tournaments today so it has only gotten larger since this.
This picture shows a man who seems to be a very good boxer posing for the camera. He is posing for the camera and seems to be outside. This picture was taken in 1888 and it seems to be taken outside somewhere where there are rolling hills. I think it teaches me that athletes wanted to look good as well as be an athlete. They somewhat cared about their looks and that is how it is today. A lot of athletes tend to want a lot of fame and this guy in the picture looks like he is trying to show himself off to anyone who sees the picture.
This picture is showing a baseball team at the opening of a league in the 1880's. This picture shows a baseball team taking a team photo with a bunch of spectators in the background. This picture was taken in the 1880's in New York. This picture teaches me about my topic because it shows unity in sports. If you look at the team everyone is wearing the same thing and it shows an all for one, one for all approach to sports which is how a lot of sports today are played. Also if you look at the spectators they all are wearing the same thing which shows that fans were not as out going as they are today. Games back then may have been a little more civilized.
This image here shows a woman playing a round of golf. This was taken in New York in the 1870's. This picture shows that even women were involved in athletics. She is following through on her swing. One thing I notice is that she is wearing a really long dress which means maybe showing skin back then was considered bad. Also this picture teaches me that women also had part in the upcoming of athletics in America. It also seems that she is playing with me which could me sports between men and women were integrated.
Piece of data
The information being displayed is the price of baseballs in the late 1800's. This shows that companies tried to make a profit from sports. They could take a task such as selling baseballs and make a fortune because it was the next big thing. Also it shows the prices back then. They were kind of high but probably because they were in high demand. Everybody wanted to probably play baseball. This shows how sports can somewhat create jobs and help the economy as well because it is setting up a business for someone.
