1930-1960
Introduction to the 1930-1960 Period
The 1930-1960 time period of sports was absolutely huge for sports development. During this time period collegiate athletes starting get credit and even highschool athletes. Also during this time period new sports arose such as football and basketball. Many sports were also created just for a past time and pure enjoyment. This time period shows how sports were integrated into Americans everyday lives! Many clubs were created also for intermural sports for ametuers who just wanted to have fun and not be as competitive. Also even schools started integrating sports into kids lives as P.E. classes were created to keep kids active and healthy. It was also an idea in the 1950's that people who participated in sports were a lot healthier than people who didn't participate in sports. America today still uses this concept and we have even created programs for kids off this idea that was brought up in the 50's. For example we have the NFL Play 60 were we encourage young children to play atleast an hour a day outside to create a healthy lifestyle.
Primary Source
This is a newspaper article showing Samuel Baugh, who is a Hall of Fame quarterback for the NFL. This was written in 1948 and basically was a little biography of the famous athlete. I think this is significant because in the article it mentions that he started out playing football in highschool which means that children and teenagers started to get into sporting events. So instead of only hearing about just professionals you started to hear more about kids and collegiate athletes. This created changes also in the fact that this is when athletes names really got out to the public. You started thinking of Sports heroes as people you wanted to be like and it is still like that today in our culture.
Photos
This is a portrait of New York University Basketball player Dolph Schayes. This was taken in 1946 and this was taken at New York University. This picture is significant because it shows a collegiate basketball player. This was really the start of basketball becoming popular and the fact that it wasn't a professional player is also significant. This picture shows the change of professional athletes being famous to even collegiate athletes becoming famous.
This is a picture of 2 unknown women rollerskating in a skating rink. This was taken in 1957 and is a very significant photo telling us about the sports during this time period. This shows us that sports could also be to just have fun instead of always being a competition. For example instead of racing on skates you could just skate for the fun. Instead of playing football against one another you could just throw the ball around for fun. This shows us how much America adopted sports into a past time.
Video
This is a video of roller skiing taking place. This is significant because it shows us Americas adaptibility. It shows that if they want to ski and there isnt any snow that they are going to find a way to do it. Also is goes back to what I was saying before that this wasn't really a sport as much as it was a past time. You could also say this was the start of extreme sports in the U.S.
